Moody's Namena Fiji Islands

Diving the best sites in the South Pacific!

The term "tropical paradise" may be overused these days, but NAMENALALA ISLAND truly is an environmentalist’s utopia. Very little of this dramatically beautiful, 110 acre, dragon-shaped private island has been touched by development. The island is essentially a giant nature preserve of towering trees, virgin palm-swept beaches…. and absolute seclusion. Try this it is UNIQUE

Hiking trails cross the island where one can visit rock ruins of an ancient culture, explore remote beaches or birdwatch.

Offshore it also has one of the most renowned diving spots in the whole of Fiji!

Moody's Namena

Five of the six hexagonal wood and bamboo bures, designed to accommodate a couple, are perched on cliff tops. One bure is on the beach. Each has a panoramic view of reefs, beaches and distant islands. Sliding louvre doors open for a 180 degree view to take advantage of cooling tradewinds.

Lighting in your bure is by romantic gaslights or solar-powered brass cabin lights (like they use on yachts). Coffee/tea-making facilities and hot water heater operate on gas. The fan over your bed, for our summer months when the tradewinds are not sufficient, runs off solar.

Each bure has a king canopy bed and two bathrooms joined by a large shower.

The land and sea here are a natural breeding and meeting ground for creatures of all descriptions.

Fluffy baby booby birds grow to adulthood in the sanctuary of trees in the nature reserve.

Elegant long-tailed tropic birds nest in cliff-sides, lesser frigates chase the boobys for their dinner, flying fox go for fruit.

The banded rail is a common sight (no cats or mongoose on the island).

Those of you who are interested in birdwatching, here are some of the birds you will see on Namenalala Island.

Reef heron, barn owl, Fiji goshawk, Pacific pigeon, white-throated pigeon, spotted turtle dove, friendly ground dove, crimson-crowned fruit dove, kingfisher, white-breasted woodswallow, Fiji shrikebill, grey-backed white-eye and the orange-breasted honeyeater.

Annually, in the months between December through to February, green and hawksbill turtles nest on to the beaches. In February the young hatchlings emerge from their nests, making their way down our beaches to take their inaugural dip in the South Pacific.
