Penticost
Island, first sighted by European Explorers on Whit Sunday, which
explains the strange name! Famous for the incredible naghol
- the land diving which takes place every April through to June.
This ritual of the Nagol has been practised for centuries and is
designed to appease the spirit of Tamalie and ensure a successful Yam
harvest.
Towers
of up to 35 metres are built in the shape of a man, and then amid much
ceremony, jumpers from as young as 9 years old leap off the towers, with
only Liana vines attached to their ankles to prevent them from crashing
to their deaths. An amazing sight and experience - and you thought
modern bungy jumping was scary enough!
The
main attraction for Pentecost Island is the Land Diving and also its
profusion of Traditional Villages.
