Ambrym Island, named the black Island because of its dark volcanic soils, is the remains of a huge volcano which rises magnificently out of the surrounding Pacific Ocean. Amazingly it has twin volcanoes and is one of the few places in the world where you can see the boiling lava lakes of twin Volcanoes, sometimes on a clear day at the same time.

Other unique attractions on the islands are Rom Dancing, Custom Dances, Magic and Sand Drawings.

Accommodation - East Ambrym

Savuli Community Bungalows

New in 2006, these lovely Bungalows are located in South East Ambrym, 5 Minutes by truck from the Bungal Airport, and are owned by the small Savuli Comunity which has around 550 villagers.

There are 6 bungalows that they are Planning to build, but at present only two are completed. Mr Jebby Talo who is the main person in that community, advises that as soon as the 2 bungalows are operating profitably they will use the funds to complete the remaining 4 bungalows. 

The bungalows that have been built, are beside a black sand beach and are of traditional design and construction with a thatched roof and bamboo and stone construction. There is a shared bathroom with flush toilet and showers.

Overnight Tour to Volcano - Mt Benbo and Mt Marum Volcano

If you are really interested in the Volcanoes you can take an overnight trip from Savuli Community bungalows to the volcanoes and back. The truck will take you from a village call Toak and take an hours drive before arriving at Endu Village where you start your trekking. The trekking is a hard trekking, therefore we always advise you to take an overnight trip, because it is easier with your guides and before arrival in the area, you will find a place to camp , before heading off to the Volcano. After that you can come back and stay at the camp overnight, then the next morning you can leave for the return trip to the Bungalows. Cost: NZD 212.00 one person, NZD115pp more than one person.

Magic & Rom Dance - 

Ambrym has a lot of magic, that they can show you, that can be either in the bungalows or around the Villages that you will be visiting, plus in South East Ambry the famous Rom dance is also performed. This experience combines the two.
