Ambrym Island, named the black Island because of its dark volcanic soils, is the remains of a huge volcano which rises magnificently out of the surrounding Pacific Ocean. Amazingly it has twin volcanoes and is one of the few places in the world where you can see the boiling lava lakes of twin Volcanoes, sometimes on a clear day at the same time.

Other unique attractions on the islands are Rom Dancing, Custom Dances, Magic and Sand Drawings.

Solomon Douglas Guest House

Solomon Douglas guest house is owned by Mr Lan Douglas, and is on the northern part of Ambrym. The flight takes you to the west part of Ambrym, and then the boat will take you about 3 - 4 hours from West to North Ambrym where you will be met by Mr Douglas.

The Guesthouse has ocean front bungalows beside the wood carving village of Ranon on a magnificent black sand beach. There are 2 traditional bungalows, each having two rooms with a double and a single bed. There is one shared shower and a shared flush toilet. Excellent meals prepared by the family, but no alcohol so BYO if required.

Adventure Tours from Solomon Douglas Guest House

Full day Volcano Tour - a trip from Solomon Douglas' guest house to Mt Marum & Mt Benbo Volcanoes and back the same day. The trip includes guides from North Ambrym, your lunch and luggage carriers. It’s hard trekking and its more for the young and fit, not recommended for older people to do this trip. A fairly long tramp through some of the most primitive landscapes in the world, but memories for a lifetime! Cost: NZD120.00 one person, NZD89.00pp more than 1 person.

2 Days/1 night Volcano Camping trip - If you are very fit, it can be achieved in a day's walk, with the previous tour, however this awesome landscape enthralls people and a night spent camping on the edge of Maroum allows a less rushed climb to the top and back - an experience to remember. Conditions are primitive and meals basic, but is well worthwhile for those who don't mind roughing it a bit. Cost: NZD211.00 one person, NZD184 more than 1 person.

Nature and Gardens walk: An interesting short tour to visit gardens and see how Ambrym people tend to their yams, manioc and other crops. Cost: NZD10 per person.

Rom Dance Demonstration: A half day Tour visiting Fanla Cultural Village which is about 30 minutes walk up the hill from the bungalow, and from there you can witness this famous custom dancing called the Rom dance. This is a very colorful dance, and it is unique to the people from Ambrym. Cost: NZD127.00 one person, NZD116 more than 1 person.
