Surfing at Sa'Moana Resort, Samoa

Sa'Moana Resort
Samoa is still very much a new area as far as surfing goes. You may be able to surf a spot that no one has before. Samoa has waves all year round. It is quite unique in the fact that it really doesn’t have any “beach breaks” as such. The majority of locations are either coral reefs or rock and powerful waves are generated from far away. The so called “dry season” (April to November) normally sees the south shore getting all the swell with E to W winds, and during the “wet season” (December to March), with off shores on the south side, is when we expect the north swells to hit  the north side of Upolu.

Sa'Moana Resort provide live in surf guides. Also many of the places they surf are accessed only by boat

The Resort have a 34ft aluminium twin hull craft and a 29ft fibreglass mono hull. Both boats have shade canopies, ladders, storage areas and also are rigged for some serious fishing.  Land accessed surf spots are accessed by either our  8 seater 4WD Chevy Suburban or the 12 seater Toyota passenger van. On most days its approximately 1 hour from the resort, thru some great scenery, to the breaks however the rewards once in the water are worth it.. That is of course apart from Sa’Moana Right and Left, straight out in front of the resort, and Salamumu Point about 2 minutes away by car or van.

Here are a few of the sites Sa'Moana will take you to, although there are many more

Salamumu

Salamumu Point:  A down the line left hand wave, with some great bowls, within walking distance of Sa’Moana Resort

Coconuts: An incredibly hollow right-hander that has been compared to HT’s in the Mentawais. Holds up to around 10ft

Sa’Moana Right and Lefts:  Two fun waves right out in front of the resort, they need a west to SW swell to be at their best. They are fast

Nuusafee Island:  Also called Devils Island due to it being a Samoan cultural site. A very fast left hand wave with big sections on the outer reef and the inside that can provide some mind blowing barrels. Also holds up to around 15ft +

Inside Siumu: A short fun left with wackable walls. Outside Siumu:  A little more serious that “Inside” with longer and bowlier sections.

Boulders

Boulders: A classic left-hand point break. Very powerful and protected in the SE trades. Can hold up to 15ft+

Tiavea: A Sunset style right hand peak that has a great drop and provides some great tubes, and moderate length rides. Reputedly holds up to 15ft. At times a left also breaks off the peak. There are a several other waves in the same area.

Solosolo: A fairly long right hand wave with bowl sections and down the line fun

Depending on conditions you may depart the resort early morning and take breakfast with you and spend all morning surfing and return for lunch or you may have a big breakfast back at the resort and depart after breakfast (taking picnic lunch) and return in the afternoon.
